White Sox place Lance Lynn on 10-day injured list

The White Sox placed all-star pitcher Lance Lynn on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with right knee inflammation. The move is retroactive to Sunday.

Lynn said the knee has been an issue since his Aug. 12 start against the Yankees at the Field of Dreams game in Iowa.

"It hasn't gone away," said Lynn, who is 10-4 with a 2.59 ERA in 135⅔ innings. "Each start's been a little different. We probably could have kept going, but we didn't want to risk putting something in jeopardy where I was going to be worrying about things coming down the stretch."

Said Sox manager Tony LaRussa: "It's precautionary. It's irritating him. If you've got time to fix it, let's go ahead and do it."

It is believed that Lynn will have to miss just one start. He is eligible to return Sept. 8, when the Sox are at Oakland.

"If it's longer than one time through the rotation, that's when you run a risk of having too much time off," Lynn said. "But with the way the schedule works out and where we're at in the calendar, I still have the ability to get a couple starts before October. Hopefully we get everything on track to where we're good to go."

The Sox filled Lynn's roster spot by recalling Danny Mendick from Class AAA Charlotte.

No Anderson:

Tim Anderson (sore legs) was not in the lineup Tuesday as the White Sox hosted Pittsburgh. After not playing from Aug. 21-24, Anderson was 5-for-17 from Aug. 25-28 before sitting out a 13-1 victory over the Cubs on Sunday.

"His legs are such an important part of defense and offense," said manager Tony LaRussa. "You've got to try and get them well because if they're sore all through the month of September, they're not going to get unsore in a hurry."

Luis Robert led off against the Pirates.

Getting healthy:

Manager Tony LaRussa expects outfielder Billy Hamilton to be activated Wednesday. Adam Engel will begin a rehab assignment when the Sox go on the road this weekend.
