Harper launches cosmetology program
Harper College will launch a new cosmetology program this fall through its Continuing Education division. Information sessions on how to become a licensed cosmetologist will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in the Wojcik Conference Center, Room W219, on the college's main campus, 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine.
Students will cover basic training; practical chemical application/hair treatment; hair styling/hair dressing; shop management and sanitation; aesthetics; nail technology; and related electives. The program is designed to take between 10 and 16 months to complete.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in the field is projected to grow 10 percent from 2014 to 2024, faster than the average for all occupations.
"Cosmetology is an in-demand industry that allows a lot of flexibility," said Norma Nerstrom, manager of Harper's Continuing Education Career Training. "Licensed cosmetologists have several career options available to them."
