Girls water polo: Rolling Meadows gets past Prospect
Rolling Meadows' girls water polo program added to a season which already included a high-water mark for victories with its most impressive win yet.
In sectional quarterfinal play Thursday at Fremd, No. 5 seed Rolling Meadows knocked off the Mid-Suburban East champion, No. 4 seed Prospect, 6-5.
The Mustangs (22-8) advance to a 7 p.m. Friday sectional semifinal against Fremd, the top seed, while Prospect finished its season with a 14-10 record.
The Mid-Suburban League champion Vikings (24-6) moved on by topping Schaumburg 12-5.
No. 2 sectional seed Barrington earned a 12-2 victory over Elk Grove. The Fillies (23-5) will face Conant in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Friday.
The No. 3 Cougars advanced by topping Hersey 12-4. All-conference picks Sam Wooley and Paulina Chowanieck had 4 goals apiece for Conant, while Madison Burkhalter scored twice for Hersey.
Wooley finished with 6 steals while Cam Rosas stopped 18 shots and Nia Tsoulos earned 3 ejections for Conant (18-12).
Buffalo Grove sectional: Allison Travetto led the way with 8 goals as top sectional seed Stevenson advanced with a 20-5 quarterfinal victory against host Buffalo Grove.
Claire Haas had 3 goals, and Fiona Gaffney and Ashley Carollo had 2 apiece for the Patriots (30-1).
Kate Godley and Dascha Yermol each scored twice for Buffalo Grove (10-18).
Fourth-seeded Palatine earned the right to face Stevenson at 7 p.m. Friday by defeating Mundelein 4-2. Jasmina Mesic had a pair of goals for the Pirates (14-14), while Mathilde Mogensen and Kristin Anderson had 1 each and goalie Tess O'Brien turned away 15 shots. Abby Luka scored twice for Mundelein (10-20).
Highland Park and Libertyville will meet in Friday's second semifinal at 8 p.m.
The Giants advanced by topping Deerfield 6-2, while No. 6 seed Libertyville took No. 3 seed Lake Forest to overtime before earning an 8-7 victory.
Coach Tracy Balla's team got 4 goals from Jess Lanty and 2 from Grace Hurley in improving to 10-17.
Glenbrook South sectional: Kristen Burger led the way with 4 goals as Maine West advanced to the semifinals with a 9-6 victory over the host Titans.
Maine West (15-12) meets New Trier, a 16-5 winner against Glenbrook North, in a 7 p.m. quarterfinal Friday.
