Cove Career Center opens

The Cove School, 350 Lee Road in Northbrook, celebrated the Oct. 7 opening of its Cove Career Center, 1370 Meadow Road.

The Career Center is an extension of the Cove School's longtime mission to help develop children with disabilities into community schools or postsecondary education.

The center offers young adults job opportunities and job coaching, academic instruction, and provides social support and training in independent living skills as it helps transition students to independent living in their home and their community.

The center has lots of natural lighting in its classrooms due to floor-to-ceiling windows, and it's got a large social area. A renovated kitchen has a pair of stainless steel refrigerators, two electric stovetops, and two ovens.

The Cove Career Center is able to pair up with businesses to have students shadow people on jobs, work internships, and visit work sites. Through one-one-one instruction - which also includes teaching math, reading and writing throughout the week - the center helps them navigate public transportation, figure out banking, budgeting, grocery shopping, or get some exercise at a recreational center.

Businesses that wish to partner with the Cove Career Center are encouraged to call (847) 562-2100.
