A step back in time while in Springfield

An interview with Gina Gemberling, executive director of Visit Springfield.

Q: What's it like to visit Springfield?

A: A visit to Springfield is a step back in time - to the days when Abraham Lincoln lived and worked here, where he raised his children, and where he was laid to rest at the end of his life. It's also a nostalgic cruise in a classic car along historic Route 66, with roadside diners and drive-in movies. We're an original experience, with museums, historic sites, world-class architecture, memorials and more. While you're soaking up all of our history, you'll be dazzled by a lively city with over 400 special events each year, a vibrant arts scene, farm-to-table dining, shopping and plenty of recreational options. With a wide range of lodging, we've got plenty of options to suit every taste and budget, from cozy bed-and-breakfasts to full-service hotels and everything in between.

Q: What if someone is looking for a little more excitement?

A: Springfield has it all, whether its baseball, hockey or motorcycle racing that you're interested in watching or perhaps there's a special someone you'd like to take on a night out; we also have some great cocktail bars. For entertainment you should check out the Springfield Muni for outdoor theater or movies in the park. Springfield is also home to Central Illinois' largest live music venue, award winning Boondocks Pub and features some of the best national and local musicians. On top of all of that, we host more the 400 festivals and street parties throughout the year, there's plenty to entertain the family, young and old.

Q: Are there any local favorites visitors should try?

A: You'll be impressed by the foodie scene in Springfield. From local diners to high-end cuisine and farm-to-table restaurants, we have the flavors to make your mouth water. For coffee connoisseurs and those with a sweet tooth, try one of our local cafes and bakeries. Several of our dining hot spots have been featured on the Food Network and the Travel Channel. While you're here, be sure to try the horseshoe, a Springfield original and local tradition. Wineries, breweries and distilleries continue their popularity in Illinois and the Springfield area is no exception.

Q: What about recreational options?

A: After visiting our Abraham Lincoln historic sites and the other great attractions Springfield has to offer take a break from the hustle and bustle and enjoy all the wonderful green space in the city. There are beautiful parks across the city, including Lincoln Memorial Garden, a 100 acre preserve on the shores of Lake Springfield. There are multiple pristine places you can visit to enjoy a picnic lunch, play a round of golf or horseshoes, listen to a carillon concert or visit a botanical garden. Springfield is also a bike friendly town with miles upon miles of bike trails to ride or walk. Don't forget Knights Action Park, made up of Splash Kingdom and the Action Park, there are seven water slides with a 20,000 sq. ft. wave pool and lazy river. Plus, there are go carts, a Ferris wheel, heated driving range, 18 hole putt course, batting cages, and more.

Q: Anything else we should know about Springfield?

A: You simply cannot visit Springfield without exploring at least one of the many Lincoln sites. Whether his home or the tomb or the museum of the city's famous resident, you can learn all about our 16th president and more in Springfield. We invite you to be inspired in Springfield. Relax, reconnect, learn something new and revisit an old favorite. We look forward to welcoming you for a legendary experience. You'll find your passion here in the iconic heart of America.
