Slammers crush Schaumburg Boomers 10-2
JOLIET - The Schaumburg Boomers allowed the Joliet Slammers to score 9 unanswered runs in the middle three innings to tally a 10-2 win in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday night.
Newcomer Mike McClellan handed Schaumburg a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning with a 2-run homer. Joliet quickly tied the game in the bottom of the frame, tacked on two in the fifth, and broke the game open with 5 runs in the sixth. The Boomers had runners on base in seven different innings but could not drive home another run.
Scott Schultz suffered the loss, working 5⅓ innings while striking out five. The pitching staff tallied 10 strikeouts as Ken Knudsen fanned two and Kurt Lipscomb three. McClellan paced an 8-hit attack by notching a pair, including a double. Kenny Towns also finished with 2 hits in the loss.
The series will shift to Schaumburg at 1 p.m. on Wednesday with the Boomers (33-41) sending right-hander Josh Heddinger (2-3, 4.75) to the hill.
