Cubs' Rizzo, Baez, White Sox's Robert win Gold Gloves

The votes are in, and Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo and shortstop Javier Baez and White Sox center fielder Luis Robert were big winners Tuesday night.

The trio won Gold Gloves, which were determined by the SABR Defensive Index ratings.

It was the fourth defensive honor for Rizzo, who also won Gold Gloves in 2016 and 2018-19.

On Saturday, the Cubs picked up Rizzo's $16.5 million club option for next season.

Even though his skills in the field are well known, this season's Gold Glove was the first for Baez.

Along with Ernie Banks (1960) and Don Kessinger (1969-70), Baez is the only shortstop in Cubs history to win a Gold Glove.

Robert is the first rookie in Sox history to win a Gold Glove. The 23-year-old outfielder had a .994 fielding percentage and he committed 1 error in 154 chances while flashing ridiculous range.

“I have always dreamed of winning a Gold Glove, so this is a dream come true,” Robert said in a statement. “I joked around this season with Yolmer Sanchez about the possibility of winning it one day and being a Gold Glover like him. I felt happy with my defense, but I know I can do more and be better.

“I have to thank (coach) Daryl Boston because he helped me adjust to the big leagues and taught me to take better advantage of my defensive skills. This award is a motivation for me.”
