Glenview's Chicago Lighthouse helps launch road race and walk
Glenview's Chicago Lighthouse has teamed with the Chicago Central Lions Club to offer the inaugural Rise to Shine Run & Walk on Saturday, Oct. 23.
The Chicago Lighthouse Huber Vision Rehabilitation Center, 222 Waukegan Ave., founded in 1906, provides comprehensive vision care and social services for people who are blind, who have disabilities, or who are veterans, helping them live more independently. The Chicago Lighthouse serves more than 67,000 people each year.
The Rise to Shine event celebrates wellness and inclusion while helping support the two longtime service agencies. The Chicago Central Lions Club was founded in 1917.
The event is sponsored by and will be run throughout a course in the Illinois Medical District, two miles west of the Chicago Loop. The course is just south of Roosevelt Road, from Oakley to Wood streets.
There will be USA Track and Field-certified and chip-timed 10- and 5-kilometer races, as well as a mile course. People may wear fun shirts or even costumes, or enroll as a team of three people up to 100. There also will be a "Family Dash Bash" open at 7 a.m. offering a race and fun activities for children.
The longer 10- and 5-kilometer races will start at 7:30 a.m. for adaptive participants and at 8 a.m. for general participants. The event is intended to support health, wellness and inclusion, as well as to benefit Chicago Lighthouse and the Chicago Central Lions Club. The conclusion of the event should be around 10 a.m.
Registered runners will receive the usual race "swag," and age group awards will be presented in 5-year increments for people 70 years old and beyond. Volunteer opportunities also are available.
