St. Peter track places second and boys relay break school record
In their first conference action of 2017, the St. Peter track and field team placed right in the middle of two track powerhouses with a strong second-place finish. Holy Angels of Aurora placed first at the Aurora Catholic Conference meet with 489.5 points. St. Peter and Annunciation battled it out for second place with St. Peter coming out on top with 424.5 points to Annunciation's 388 points.
En route to the second place team finish, the St. Peter eighth-grade boys 4x200 relay team dominated their event with a St. Peter School record breaking time of 1:52.98.
Eric Ford and Joe Drew got the team off to a good start with the Holy Angels team well within reach. Tommy Rittenhouse handed off the baton to anchor Josh Caceres with a close lead and Caceres took care of the rest with a final leg time of 24.48 seconds securing the win.
The eighth-grade boys remained dominant at the meet with Josh Caceres and Tommy Rittenhouse placing first and second in the 200-meter dash while Eric Ford won long jump. The eighth-grade boys 4x400 team again placed second to the Holy Angels team and hopes to improve their standing in that event when the two teams meet again at IESA Sectionals on May 6.
Other highlights of the meet for St. Peter include eighth-grader Mary Tork who kept her high jump win streak alive with a win by jumping 4 feet 6 inches. Tork also won the 400-meter dash as well as being on the winning girls 4x200 relay team of Brianna Huerta, Peyton Richard, Tork and Greta Prange.
Huerta and Prange also won the 200- and 400-meter dashes, respectively, while Prange tied for first place in the seventh-grade girls high jump with fellow teammate Taylor Austin with jumps of 4 feet 4 inches. Fifth-grader Jonah Augustyn showed some sprinting talent with wins in both the 50- and 200-meter dash while fellow classmate fifth-grader Colleen Thumm won the 1,600-meter run, long jump and was the anchor of a first-place 4x400 relay team.
St. Peter, which is back in conference action Saturday at Aurora Central Catholic where they will be challenged by St. Rita of Aurora, will work to maintain their place ahead of Annunciation.
