Wheaton Drama offers student workshops

Young performers can learn basic onstage and acting techniques while they develop their imagination and creativity at student workshops offered this winter and spring by Wheaton Drama.

Children can explore acting through a series of theater and improvisational games. The ensemble building class will foster each student's self-esteem and help him or her become an independent thinker, both on and off the stage.

Program instructor Anne Marie Irey has been involved in theater for more than 20 years. She minored in theater at St. Mary's College and earned her master's in education degree at DePaul University. Irey is an alumna of The Second City and spent several years performing improv in Chicago.

Recently, she taught fourth grade at Sacred Heart, where she founded an after-school drama program.

Six-week sessions will be offered at Wheaton Drama Playhouse 111, 111 N. Hale St., Wheaton. Participants who register for both classes receive a discount.

Session 1 will be Tuesdays, Jan. 12 to Feb. 16 (makeup date Feb. 23). Session 2 will be Tuesdays, March 15 to April 19 (make up date April 26). Children in kindergarten through fourth grade will meet from 4 to 4:55 p.m.; children in fifth through eighth grade meet from 5 to 5:55 p.m.

Classes are subject to change based on enrollment. The cost is $100 per session per child, and $180 per child for both sessions. Applicants must register for both sessions at same time to receive the discount.
