Wild Ones to learn about Tyler Creek flooding issues at Oct. 24 meeting

On Thursday, Oct. 24, join the Northern Kane County Chapter of Wild Ones at 7 p.m. at Christ the Lord Lutheran Church, 12N462 Tina Trail, Elgin.

Carl Missele, a longtime steward at Hawthorne Hill Nature Center, will talk about the changes that have taken place on Tyler Creek. In recent years, there has been an increase in the number and intensity of floods in Tyler Creek in Elgin.

In this talk, he will try to answer why this has happened by looking at two of the main possible causes: too many housing and industrial developments with no detention and climate change. Regardless of the causes, the talk will end with recommendations for what must be done to help minimize the effects of both.

The Northern Kane County Illinois Chapter of Wild Ones was founded in 2009 as a chapter of Wild Ones. They are committed to promoting the use of native plants in landscaping, gardening, naturescaping and land restoration. Wild Ones is a nonprofit environmental education and advocacy organization.

The mission of Wild Ones is to promote native plants, natural landscapes, and environmentally sound landscaping practices to preserve biodiversity through the preservation, restoration and establishment of native plant communities.

Wild Ones continues to lead the natural landscaping movement as we explore, teach, and change the practice of gardening in our communities and around the country to using native plants.
