Why isn't Jeffery a bigger part of game?
It isn't just local fans and media who wonder why wide receiver Alshon Jeffery isn't a bigger part of the Chicago Bears' passing game. He has 22 receptions through the first five games.
"The Jacksonville people asked me about that on (the conference call) Wednesday," coach John Fox said. "I think he's 2 catches behind our leading receiver, and he's probably in the top five in the league in yards per catch.
"So, from a production standpoint, to say that we're not getting him the ball is a little bit off."
Jeffery actually is 3 catches behind team co-leaders Eddie Royal and Zach Miller, who each have 25. Jeffery's 17.91 yards per catch are third among all players with 20 receptions or more.
All the more reason to get the ball to him, right?
"Well, yeah, we'd like to have the ball more, and we'd like to score more points, but there's only one ball, and it's hard to get it to everybody," Fox said.
"But he's been what I would consider - and I think our opponents do, too - pretty productive."
Knocking off the rust:
In his first game back after missing just two games following thumb surgery, inside linebacker Danny Trevathan was tied for third on the club with 6 tackles, despite playing with a protective cast.
"I thought he did well physically," defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said. "I didn't see the cast as a major hindrance, like I thought it might be. I didn't see him favoring it.
"He was rusty from a mental standpoint out there. I think he'll be better this week."
Trevathan was a full participant all week at practice, unlike last week when he was limited.
"As far as fitting back into the schemes and to some of things that we're doing, obviously it was way more comfortable for him this week," coach John Fox said.
"Just getting the extra reps and moving around full speed again, those are critical things that are important in how you perform."
Injury report:
Quarterback Jay Cutler (right thumb), running back Jeremy Langford (ankle), nose tackle Eddie Goldman (ankle) and cornerback Deiondre' Hall (ankle) did not practice Friday. Hall is out; the other three are doubtful.
Thirteen players are questionable: wide receivers Eddie Royal (calf) and Alshon Jeffery (hamstring), cornerbacks Tracy Porter (knee) and Bryce Callahan (hamstring), tight end Zach Miller (ribs), guards Kyle Long (shoulder) and Josh Sitton (shoulder), running back Ka'Deem Carey (hamstring), linebackers Jerrell Freeman (wrist), Willie Young (knee, elbow), Sam Acho (ribs) and Leonard Floyd (calf) and offensive tackle Bobby Massie (ankle).
All 13 players were limited Friday with the exception of Floyd, who did not practice.
Massie wasn't listed on the injury report until Friday.
"I think he just got sore," Fox said. "The (medical staff is) looking into it, and so we backed off of it, and we'll see what (Saturday) brings."
