Softball: Palatine edges Hersey 3-2
With two outs and two strikes in the bottom of the seventh inning, sophomore Anna Selleck raced home from third base on Reggie Much's infield grounder and beat the throw to the plate to lift Palatine's softball team to a 3-2 win over visiting Hersey in a Mid-Suburban League crossover on Wednesday.
Selleck had begun the inning with a double and was advanced to third by Emily Brinckerhoff.
The victory raised the Pirates' record to 6-1 and gave junior pitcher Sarah Grossman her fifth win without a loss. She struck out seven as Palatine is 1-0 in the MSL West while Hersey stands at 6-2 and 1-1 in the MSL East.
"Sarah had great command today," said Pirates assistant coach Kristen Proffitt. "She was hitting her spots and doing everything I asked of her. She never backed down to a hitter, and she never took a pitch off. She kept us in the game until we were able to score again."
Katie Wingerter's 31st career homer and seventh of the season gave the Huskies a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth.
Palatine tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the inning and it stayed that way until Selleck's run.
Amanda Stanczuk (2-for-3, walk) and Grace Seiffert (2-for- 4, double) led a Pirates offense that also received an RBI double from Brooke Bauer.
Fremd 5, Rolling Meadows 2: Junior Jess Mazur threw a 5-hitter with 7 strikeouts as host Fremd (5-1) evened its record at 1-1 in the MSL West.
Fremd junior Grace Stevens (2-for-2, 2 RBI, double) belted a 2-run homer to break a 2-2 tie.
Reagan Schneider (1-for-2, RBI, run) also doubled for the Vikings while teammates Nikki Kehoe, Anna Freveletti, Anne Marie O'Sullivan and Becca Uhrich (3 stolen bases) each had a hit.
Amanda Elkins (3-for-4, home run, double, 2 runs, RBI) and Mallory King (2-for-4, RBI) led the offense for Meadows (4-5, 0-1).
Barrington 8, Prospect 2: Host Barrington (10-1, 2-0) was led on offense by Leyden Atlas (3-for-3, 4 RBI, double), Abbey Jacobsen (2-for-3, 2 RBI), Kendall Peterson (1-for-1, 2 RBI) and Catherine McMahon (1-for-2, 2 RBI). Julia Kozar also doubled for the winners.
Winning pitcher Tori Meyer (3 innings, 6 strikeouts, 1 hit), now 2-0, and Caroline Hoppe (2 innings, 3 strikeouts, 1 hit) combined on the mound.
Alex Kanter and Colleen Palczynski had the hits for Prospect (3-2, 1-1).
Buffalo Grove 14, Hoffman Estates 5: Olivia Morini (2-for-5), Jackie Bickhaus (2-for-4), Bailey Williams (2-for-5) and Katie Fontanetta (2-for-5) and Hannah Young (double) led the offense for visiting Buffalo Grove (7-5, 1-1). Alyssa DePillips struck out four in 5 innings as the winning pitcher.
Brianna Venegas doubled for Hoffman (0-5 0-2).
Conant 11, Wheeling 0 (5 inn): Morgan Bihun (3-for-3, 3 RBI, double), Delaney Szwed 2-for-4, RBI), Jackie Burchfield (3-for-4, double, RBI), Lauren Grzelak (1-for-1, RBI, double, walk) and Carly Rossdeutcher (double, 2 RBI) paced the offense for host Conant (4-2, 2-0).
Jac Carlucci struck out 10 while tossing a 1-hitter.
Dakota Medrano had the hit for Wheeling (2-5, 0-2).
St. Viator 11, Immaculate Conception 4: Immaculate Conception jumped out to a 3-run lead but the Lions (7-2) exploded with 8 runs in the second inning.
It started when Jenna Breslin reached on an error. Adeline Swiderski doubled and Cece Kaiser then delivered a 2-run double. Aryana Ziakas and Cara Haubner (RBI) followed with singles.
A walk, fielder's choice and two outs later, Jenna Breslin's blasted a grand slam to straightaway center for her third homer of the season.
St. Viator added 3 insurance runs in the sixth, two coming on Haley Robinson's double.
"lt seemed like IC always had runners on base," said Lion coach John Scotillo. "There were no easy outs but Grace Kaiser made big pitches when she had to."
Kaiser did not allow an earned run in the last five innings and retired the final nine batters in order.
