Home sweet home: Jimenez hits first homer at G-Rate, Sox top Nats
On Monday, after being reminded his first 8 major-league home runs were hit on the road, Eloy Jimenez was asked when he was going to finally clear the fences at Guaranteed Rate Field?
"I'm not going to talk about that," the White Sox's rookie left fielder said with a wide smile. "One day, it's gonna come."
Turning the page to Tuesday, Jimenez's home homer drought came to a memorable end.
Leading off the fourth inning against Nationals starter Patrick Corbin, Jimenez hit a mammoth 462-foot home run to center field that landed on the stairs leading up to the Fan Deck.
Coupled with catcher Welington Castillo's grand slam in the first inning, the Sox slugged their way to a 7-5 interleague win over Washington at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Jimenez followed the milestone home run with a double. As he continues to settle in and gets used to big-league pitching, Jimenez has the potential to do some big damage no matter where he's playing.
"I think he's still working on getting into his own stride and is learning and continues to have the experiences," manager Rick Renteria said. "He's not up or down when you watch him, he's a very even-keeled young man. I think he understands the process and what it's taking for him to kind of make adjustments.
"At the end of the day, when it's all said and done, I think this is going to be a really, really good major-league hitter."
Manny Banuelos started for the White Sox and barely made it out of the first inning.
The 28-year-old lefty had a full count against the first five Nationals hitters he faced and was lucky to escape allowing 2 runs.
Banuelos settled down and pitched 4⅔ innings, giving up the 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks.
Moncada sits out:
After leaving Monday night's game against Washington in the seventh inning with a back strain, third baseman Yoan Moncada did not play Tuesday.
"He's doing better today," manager Rick Renteria said. "Has a mid-lat/back strain. We'll continue to monitor him.
"We have a day off tomorrow, and we'll reevaluate him on Thursday, see how he's doing."
