Roselle OKs liquor license for new Polish grocery

Editor's note: This story has been corrected to remove the incorrect name of a Roselle business that had a request for a retail license placed on hold because of previous delays in remitting food taxes.

The Roselle Village Board has approved a liquor license for a new Polish grocery store and deli that recently opened on Irving Park Road.

The Little Market opened Aug. 19 and was approved for a license to sell package beer and wine. The store, owned by Margaret Bukowski, also does catering.

The village board, which met Wednesday, delayed two other license requests, one for a "bring your own" license for Manila Fiesta Restaurant and another for video gambling for Italian Pizza Kitchen.

Manila Fiesta is seeking a license to allow beer and wine to be brought in by customers but not sold on the premises. Although BYO licenses are allowed, several trustees raised concerns over the ordinance.

"How do you control how much wine and beer people can bring in?" Trustee Barb Sarno said.

The BYO licensee can charge a corking and glass fee for patrons who do not bring their own openers and/or glasses.

Roselle Police Chief Steve Herron said his main concern with a BYO license is being able to hold the establishment responsible in the event of a problem stemming from alcohol consumption.

"This is really a peculiar one from a legal standpoint," village attorney Jim Knippen said.
