Search continues for driver who crashed into Schaumburg home

The driver of a 2013 Nissan Sentra caused extensive damage to a Schaumburg house last October, crashing through its attached garage and living room before abandoning the vehicle and running away.

But while the damage has been completely repaired, blood samples still await analysis by the crime lab in hopes of identifying the driver.

Schaumburg Police Chief Jim Lamkin said the four-month-old investigation has not hit a dead end, but is simply awaiting the results of the blood work. Backlogs at the area crime lab unfortunately mean that waits of up to six months aren't out of the question, he said.

Police quickly identified the registered owner of the car that crashed into the house on the 1000 block of Springinsguth Road at 3:20 a.m. Oct. 4. But no one has accepted responsibility for being behind the wheel at the time of the crash.

Investigators determined that the car was headed south on Springinsguth when its driver lost control. The car crashed through a fence and into the side of the home's garage before it plunged forward into the residence itself. The driver fled before the residents could investigate.

Officers checked with hospitals after the crash but didn't find anyone who seemed to have been injured in it.

The gas line to the house was severed in the crash, and authorities evacuated adjacent homes for a time. Damage to the house left it uninhabitable until the holidays.
