The American Association of University Women Batavia-Geneva-St. Charles branch will host its 40th annual Creative Writing Awards ceremony on Thursday, April 4, in the Newton room at the Batavia Public Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave. (Route 31).
Sixteen students from area middle schools will receive medals from the branch in their 2019 writing competition.
Prizes are awarded for original fiction and nonfiction. The annual writing contest has been sponsored by the Tri-Cities AAUW for more than 30 years.
The awards ceremony begins at 6:30 p.m. It will feature an address by award-winning Chicago-area novelist Julie Oleszek.
Guests are welcome. For more information, contact membershipaauw@yahoo.com.
The branch continues its tradition of encouraging and honoring aspiring young writers from the Tri-Cities area through the Creative Writing Contest. In this technological age where communication via texting and tweeting sacrifices creativity for brevity, it is rewarding to see that many young people still take time to seek self-expression through prose and poetry. Oleszek holds a Master of Arts in Education from National-Louis University. A native of the Chicago suburbs, she devotes her time to writing and spending time with her husband, Mike, and dog, Bo. "All But One" is her third novel, building on the beloved stories in "The Fifth Floor" and "Just Like Ziggy."
