Concert to accompany interactive art exhibit at Ryerson Woods

Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods is winding down its run of "TIDES: A Prelude," an exhibit by local poet, global advocate and artist in residence for Van Gogh Chicago Arica Hilton, with a concert series send-off.

The "Nature in Concert Series" will be held Saturdays and Sundays April 17 and 18, and 24 and 25. Guests will enjoy a personalized, in-person tour of "TIDES: A Prelude" with Arica Hilton, followed by an exclusive installation viewing and intimate live concert at the Riverwoods village hall.

This multimedia concert blends an immersive art installation and poetry by Hilton with an exclusive piano performance by internationally renowned conductor and classical musician Vladimir Kulenovic.

This concert series will be the first experience of its kind between Hilton and Kulenovic. This collaboration is a story of artists coming together at a time of challenge; a story of finding peace, healing and reconnection through the arts.

This interdisciplinary, multimedia exhibition, which currently can be viewed online, in-person or via the visual and auditory 360° virtual tour at www.brushwoodcenter.org/tides360.html, explores the subject of nature through music, poetry and paintings.

Guests can experience this unique fusion between the art forms alongside the artists themselves, through live performances of Bach, Beethoven, Debussy and Scriabin; the poetry of Paul Verlaine and Hilton, which translates into Hilton's paintings through her love of mathematics and physics; and the exploration of the relation between sound, color and form.

"At Brushwood Center, we have witnessed the powerful role of art and nature during this pandemic," Executive Director Catherine Game said. "Arica Hilton and Vladimir Kulenovic's work evokes the vitality of nature and reminds us of our own strength and adaptability in the face of change."

There are two available concerts per date at 1 and 3 p.m. Audiences will be limited to 15 people per event, and CDC recommended restrictions such as face masks and social distancing will be required.

Admission is $40 per person for Brushwood Center members and Riverwoods residents, and $50 per person for nonmembers. The exhibition runs through April 25.

Brushwood Center at Ryerson Woods, 21850 N. Riverwoods Road, Riverwoods, is nestled on 565 acres of woodlands in the heart of Lake County. The preserve's rich natural and cultural history is recognized by its dual designation as an Illinois Nature Preserve and a Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places.

This site was originally home and hunting grounds of the Potawatomi people and other local Indigenous communities. Brushwood Center was founded in 1984 to support the preservation of the woods following the transfer of the land and home from Nora and Edward Ryerson, along with several neighboring families' properties, to Lake County Forest Preserves.
