Girls volleyball: Paris, Horwath help Barrington defeat Warren

Barrington's Campbell Paris and Jessica Horwath were too much for Warren Monday in the Class 4A sectional girls volleyball semifinals at Glenbrook South in Glenview.

The Barrington duo combined for 18 kills and controlled the net as Barrington eliminated the Blue Devils 25-16, 25-23.

"We were excited coming into the match," said Paris, a 6-foot-5 junior who had 11 kills. "It was really blocking and shutting down their hitters. I thought we did a great job of that."

Horwath said watching film on Warren helped the Fillies.

"We didn't play them last year, but we watched some film, so we knew what we were expecting," said Horwath, a 6-foot junior who had 7 kills.

"We definitely wanted to come in aggressive and use physicality because we knew we had that coming in."

Second-seeded Barrington (31-7) advanced to Wednesday's sectional final at 6 p.m. against host and sixth-seeded Glenbrook South, which stunned top-seeded Hersey in three sets.

"We really work on starting fast," Barrington coach Michelle Jakubowski said. "And then finishing. I think we did a real nice job from top to bottom in the first set."

Barrington took off to a 7-2 lead in the first set and never looked back. The Fillies led by as 10 and won easily 25-16.

Barrington looked like it would make it two quick sets, but Warren (22-15) battled hard in the second set.

After allowing Barrington to build a 9-3 lead, Warren came roaring back. Led by GabriElle Brewer, Ruth Ziegler, Lauren Shaw and Kendal Crawford, the Blue Devils came all the way back to lead 20-17.

But Paris was just too much for Warren. She had 4 of her 11 kills as Barrington scored the next 7 points. The Fillies held off a late rally by the Blue Devils to win 25-23.

"I thought we did a nice job of staying calm," Jakubowski said. "They stayed calm and cool and knew they would fight back and win it."

Jenna Meitzler had 11 assists and 3 kills for Barrington. Gwen Adler had 7 assists while Berkeley Ploger had 2 kills and Amanda Cleary had a strong back row for the Fillies.

Crawford led Warren with 10 kills. Shaw added 4 kills and Brewer had 21 assists.

"We thought we got some momentum in the second game," Warren coach Yun Chen said. "We had some things going our way. It was a great season for our girls."
