Team USA Olympic Volleyball Gold Medalists join Aurora city leaders in saluting Metea Valley's state champs

It was a night of state and world champions at Aurora City Hall Dec. 14.

Mayor Richard Irvin and the Aurora City Council honored the 2021 IHSA Class 4A Girls Volleyball Champions from Metea Valley High School.

In a room filled with the high school's signature black and gold colors, city council members came with pom-poms and cheers as the young ladies received trophies and personalized honorary street signs for their historic win last month.

The Metea Valley Mustangs Girls Volleyball team made history this year by defeating the most decorated program in Illinois girls' volleyball history and closing out a dream 40-2 season.

The team clinched a stunning 15-25, 25-18, 25-17 victory over Mother McAuley High School in the Class 4A state championship, earning the first state championship title for any sport at Metea Valley High School and the first public high school to earn the Class 4A title in volleyball since 2010.

The young champions were overwhelmed by the reception and visibly emotional by the surprise congratulations from their athletic heroes of the 2020 USA Olympic Volleyball Team that earned gold by defeating Brazil in three straight sets at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Jordan Larson, three-time Olympian and team captain of the 2020 team, and Jordan Thompson, the youngest member of the 2020 team, virtually congratulated the state champions and gave them advice for the future.
