These are only a few of the markers of Chicago Cubs super-fandom. If you ask anyone to name the biggest Cubs fan they know, if they know Rob, they will say it is 43 year old Robert T. George.
Just how did Rob get to be the biggest Cubs fan ever? How does a typical kid from the Chicago suburbs wind up with a daughter named after Wrigley's famous outfield wall "Ivy" and a son named after the iconic Wrigleyville Street "Waveland"?
Rob';s story is pretty typical, as he was born into a family of Cubs fans. His father, his uncle, and his older brother all worked on indoctrinating him in his early years. Around the age of 7, his passion for his team became serious. Rob watched every single game of the memorable 1984 season and then met Ryne Sandberg. That's where fandom went into overdrive. Fast forward to the present day Rob.
Present day Rob studies the minor leagues, listens to every game on the radio (for a more authentic experience), developed a friendship with Tom Ricketts, attends every Wrigley home opener, attends spring training in Arizona, attended several games of the 2016 World Series, and of course, named his daughter Ivy, age 6 and his son William Waveland, age 5. Rob has taken time off of work every year for as long as he can remember to attend the Cubs Convention, he has written articles on his beloved Cubbies, he published a book called "F is for Finally" on his beloved Cubs after winning the 2016 World Series, he wore Chicago Cubs shoes to his wedding, he gifted his groomsmen with Cubs watches, and his wedding band includes baseball bats and red and blue stones.
Still, the origins of Rob's fandom are not out of the ordinary. So why is his fandom so extraordinary? The unique factor is Rob. It is the passion and energy Rob puts into the things he loves. You can see that love in every single interaction with his wife Eleni, his daughter Ivy, and his son William Waveland. He loves and appreciates every single minute of his life.
When faced with his terminal cancer diagnosis three months ago, Rob wasn't angry or sad. He focused on the love he has for his family, for his friends, and for life. "I have had the best life ever," he said. "It's just shorter than I would have liked."
Last week, Rob was moved into Home Hospice Care, but it has not brought him down. Rob's passion for life, his ability to love fiercely, his loyalty to his Cubbies and to his family, and his optimistic disposition, even when facing death, encompass why Rob is deserving of "The Biggest Fan."
Robert T. George has made all of the little moments in life worth living. They will become memories to cherish. Robert T. George is, without saying, the BIGGEST CUBS FAN who ever lived.
