Palatine wants complaint-free fun run, tent parties set for downtown

Organizers of a fun run and outdoor parties planned for Saturday in downtown Palatine have been placed on notice by the village council to not disturb the neighborhood with noise.

After voicing their concerns, councilmen recently granted a waiver of Palatine's sound amplification ordinance for Tap House Grill to host a postrace party for the Halloween Hustle 5K Run and Kids Dash in a parking lot tent from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday.

Tap House also will use the tent for its Pumpkin Smash Bash with a band, beer truck, costume prizes and more from 7 to 11 p.m.

While some councilmen spoke about too much noise potentially coming from the tent parties at Tap House, Mayor Jim Schwantz said he has more concerns about the Halloween Hustle overseen in the morning by Adrenaline Sports Management Inc.

"It's an event we've already had several issues with," Schwantz said. "This is an event where the sound gets turned on ... before the time is allowed."

Officials said last year's Halloween Hustle triggered many complaints from residents after loud music played and a public-address system was used starting about 6:45 a.m. - not 8 a.m. as approved by the village.

The Halloween Hustle will start in an Eric Drive industrial area with the children's dash at 8:10 a.m. and 5K at 8:30 a.m.

Palatine Township Highway Commissioner Aaron Del Mar, owner of Adrenaline Sports Management, has told the village council he plans to be at the race to oversee operations.

Tap House sales and events manager Karen Schutz said she will be present Saturday to monitor the tent in the morning and evening to make sure there are no noise problems.

Palatine Councilman Brad Helms said while it's good to have a vibrant downtown with events, residents living there also want some peaceful weekends.

"They moved downtown, they know what they signed up for, and so on and so forth," Helms said. "How much is too much? I want to find that threshold and stay there. I don't want to continue to have them choke down every weekend filled with something."
