It is time for Americans to speak up
We had hoped the Republican Congress would be able to rein in their new standard-bearer and keep us safe from an irrational, impulsive leader and his posse of bigots, bullies and billionaires.
On the first day of the new Congress, when Republicans attempted to eliminate "ethics" from their vocabulary, we realized the GOP Congress has made strengthening their party a priority far above the concerns of their constituents.
We constituents must not stand aside, silently witnessing our dysfunctional Congress falling into line as our civil rights and democracy are threatened. We citizens must expect our elected representatives to uphold our principles and lead our country toward a healthy and secure future. We must require respect, integrity and accountability from our elected officials.
This is not the time to be apathetic or cynical. We are a strong, resilient citizenry and these are the times when we must step up and participate in directing our country toward a hopeful future.
Call, write, speak up and demand attention to the issues which most concern and affect us, thorough vetting and careful consideration of Cabinet picks and Supreme Court nominees, background checks on all gun purchases, support for clean energy, fair wages, immigration reform, improving our infrastructure, keeping secure our veterans, Social Security and Medicare benefits, affordable health care, nutrition, education and housing, fulfilling our global responsibilities, protection of the rights and safety of all citizens. It is time to be heard by our Congressional representatives.
