Kane County Audubon Society to host 'Amazing Bird Race'

As part of an ongoing effort to get kids involved in birding, the Kane County Audubon Society will host "The Amazing Bird Race" Sunday, May 26.

Teams consisting of adults and children will compete to see the most bird species in a four-hour period.

Teams will meet at 8 a.m. at the pavilion at Fabyan Forest Preserve in Batavia. They will depart from the pavilion at approximately 8:15 a.m. and return to the pavilion with their checklists at 12:15 p.m.

Teams can remain at Fabyan or travel to any other locations they wish. Each team must consist of at least one adult and at least one child. Teams can be any size, but the ratio of adults to children can be no greater than 2-to-1.

The race is open to all comers. Any child ages 6 to 18 can participate. There is no entry fee.

This is not a guided walk. The Kane County Audubon Society will not be providing teams with assistance in the field. Scoring is on the honor system. For a bird to count on a team's list, it must be seen by every child on the team. Children do not have to identify the bird; they just need to see it. The team with the most species wins.

Bonus points will be awarded to teams that take selfies in the field and send them to the Kane County Audubon Society for posting on the Facebook page, website and newsletter.

In addition, a Family/Young Birders Walk will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, at the historic Corron Farm, 7N761 Corron Road in Campton Hills. If the weather looks bad, they will post details/changes at www.facebook.com/kanecountyaudubon/.

Corron Farm is on the east side of Corron Road, between McDonald and Silver Glen roads.
