Gary UMC offers class on medicine and care in the medieval church
On Sunday, Nov. 1, Gary United Methodist Church, 224 N. Main St. in Wheaton, is offering the class, “Works of Healing: Medicine and Care in the Medieval Church” at 10:10 a.m.
The medieval era is not usually remembered for excellent healthcare or social stability. Plague, famine, war and uncertainty were part of everyday life. Yet amid these hardships, monasteries and convents became important places of refuge and care for the sick.
Explore the fascinating world of medieval monastic medicine and how the Christian call to love our neighbors helped give rise to hospitals and other institutions of healing — a legacy that continues to shape the church’s ministry of care today.
This class then encourages you to continue the ministry of healing and care by giving blood on Organ and Tissue Donor Sunday on Nov. 8 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Register at garychurch.org/registrations or just show up.
The church has music, kids, youth and adult ministries, plus opportunities for local, national and global missions. On Sundays, traditional worship is at 9 a.m. and blended worship at 11:11 a.m. At both services, Kids’ Church and nursery care is available. Between services there’s Sunday school for all ages and a coffee fellowship hour. For information, go to garychurch.org or contact the church office at office@garychurch.org.
