Woman struck, killed by freight train in near Wheaton station

A woman was struck and killed by a train Sunday morning east of the Wheaton Metra station DuPage County Coroner Judith Lukas said.

A Metra spokesperson said the woman was struck at about 10:30 a.m. by a freight train east of the Wheaton Metra station.

The crossing in the area of Main Street and Liberty Drive was closed during an investigation and Metra riders experienced delays on the Union Pacific West line between Chicago and Elburn, officials said.

Metra trains run on the line every two hours on Sundays, but there was an extra mid-afternoon train planned out of Chicago at 3:40 p.m. because of the Bank of America Chicago Marathon.
