Man pleads guilty to trying to kill elderly relative, gets 12-year sentence

A DeKalb County man was sentenced last week to 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted first-degree murder in an attack on an elderly relative in her Big Rock-area home.

Kane County prosecutors alleged Koda R. Uebel, 20, punched, slapped, kicked, strangled and bit the 71-year-old woman in the 300 block of Lincoln Avenue in Big Rock Township at about 12:06 a.m. May 31, 2025.

Other relatives saw the attack on a home security camera and called 911, authorities said.

When Kane County sheriff’s deputies arrived, they saw Uebel hitting and threatening to kill the woman, officials said. Uebel attacked the deputies, biting one of them, when they forced their way into the home and eventually used a stun device to subdue him, authorities said.

Uebel lived in the 9000 block of Chicago Road, near Waterman, officials said.

He must serve at least 10 years of the prison sentence before becoming eligible for parole. He received credit for the time he has been in the Kane County jail since his arrest.
