Boomers sweep Mississippi

The Schaumburg Boomers waited through a weather delay of three hours and rewarded the fans with a 7-6 win to sweep the Mississippi Mud Monsters on Sunday afternoon at Wintrust Field.

Neither team was able to score until the fifth inning when a frantic pace began with a single run for the Boomers. Banks Tolley led off the inning with a walk and scored when Kellum Clark doubled to left-center.

Trey Bridges put Mississippi ahead with a three-run double in the top of the sixth before the Boomers answered with six to open a 7-3 advantage. Jeff Nicol, Tolley and Clark all logged RBI singles before Anthony Calarco lifted a sacrifice fly. Cole Turney singled home the other runs.

Mississippi was able to battle within 7-6 by scoring twice in the seventh and once in the eighth but left the tying run on base in the eighth and ninth as the Boomers held on for the victory.

Tolley led an 11-hit attack with four hits. Clark and Christian Fedko logged two apiece. Schaumburg also drew 10 walks in the game.

Kyle Moore earned his eighth win in relief. Caleb Riedel closed the door on the victory. Cole Zaffiro started and threw five shutout innings, finishing the week with 11 blank frames of work.

The Boomers (43-35) hit the road for six games beginning on Tuesday night at 6:35 against the Joliet Slammers. RHP Buddie Pindel (7-2, 3.38) is scheduled to start the roadtrip opener.
