Second arrest made in Wheaton carjacking

Another man has been accused of carjacking a man in Wheaton, and a DuPage County judge Tuesday ordered he be detained pretrial.

Daveon Givens, 24, of the 1200 block of Johnson Drive, is the second man who authorities say robbed a man at gunpoint at 12:53 a.m. July 24 in the 1000 block of East Willow Avenue.

Givens is charged with aggravated vehicular hijacking, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated fleeing and eluding, all felonies, according to a news release from the DuPage County state’s attorney’s office.

Authorities say the victim had just pulled into his driveway when he heard a knock on his car window, and saw a person holding a handgun. The person told him to get out of the car, “get on the ground and don’t do anything stupid.”

Another person got into the victim’s car, an Acura MDX, and drove off, while the first person left in a waiting Nissan Sentra.

Glen Ellyn police tried to stop both vehicles. They accelerated to speeds over 100 mph on Roosevelt Road. Police disabled the Nissan with a tire-deflating spike strip and two people ran off. Andrew Strong of Chicago was arrested shortly thereafter.

Police watched Givens’ house and arrested him July 25.

Authorities believe a third person was also involved.

Givens’ next court date is Aug. 24.
