Woodridge community celebrates local Special Olympics medalist

On Wednesday, July 22, local McDonald's owner/operator John Carnagio was joined by co-workers, community members and local officials in celebrating Woodridge resident and longtime crew member Samantha “Sammy” Wagner following her return from the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games, where she earned a bronze medal in the 4x400-meter relay and placed seventh in the 200-meter run in track & field.

Wagner has been a valued crew member at the Woodridge McDonald's for the past eight years. Carnagio says Wagner is known for bringing enthusiasm and positivity to both her team and customers.

Fifty-seven Illinois athletes and Unified partners were selected to represent Special Olympics Illinois Team at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Athletes competed in eight sports: athletics (track & field), bocce, bowling, gymnastics, powerlifting, swimming, Unified basketball, and Unified volleyball. Unified sports teams represent athletes with and without intellectual disabilities coming together to compete and promote inclusion.

These athletes competed on the national stage from June 20-26, showcasing their abilities and representing Illinois with pride.
