Suburban man charged with murder in Mundelein shooting
A South suburban resident faces murder charges stemming from a double shooting in Mundelein Tuesday that left a local man dead and a woman wounded.
Deandre Y. Harris, 21, of South Holland, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, authorities said Wednesday.
The victims were dating and the shooting occurred in their shared apartment on the 500 block of Deepwoods Drive, said Christopher Covelli, spokesperson for the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force.
Harris has been dating the 19-year-old daughter of the female victim, Covelli said. The teen also lives in the apartment, Covelli said.
Harris was visiting his girlfriend when he got into an argument with the 48-year-old male victim, whose name hasn’t been released. Tensions between the men “had been brewing for some time,” Covelli said.
Harris took out a semiautomatic pistol and began shooting, hitting the man and the 47-year-old woman, police said. He then left with his girlfriend in a black Chevrolet Blazer, according to police.
The female victim and a witness called 911 about 11:40 a.m. to report the shooting, authorities said.
The man was pronounced dead at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. The woman is expected to survive.
Illinois State Police subsequently spotted the Blazer headed south on the Bishop Ford Expressway near 130th Street on Chicago’s Far South Side, stopped it and arrested Harris and his girlfriend, who had been driving, Covelli said.
The handgun police believe was used in the shooting was recovered after a search of the Blazer, Covelli said.
The teen was released without charges overnight, Covelli said.
Harris is scheduled to appear in Lake County circuit court this morning. Prosecutors intend to ask a judge to keep Harris in custody while his case is pending.
