Man charged with DUI in fatal crash on I-88

A Warrenville man has been charged with killing a woman during a chain-reaction crash Saturday on I-88.

Vincent M. Buttimer, 35, of the 2S500 block of Cynthia Drive, is charged with felony aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol — causing death, driving under the influence of alcohol — BAC .08 or higher, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and improper lane usage, according to DuPage County court records.

According to a prosecutor’s petition to detain Buttimer, the crash happened around 10:11 p.m. Saturday in the westbound lanes of I-88, west of Winfield Road.

A Buick Envista rear-ended a Honda, which then veered to the right. The Buick came to a stop in a right-hand lane due to extensive damage.

Then a Subaru driven by Buttimer hit a Hyundai and the Buick, according to the petition.

The driver of the Hyundai, 27-year-old Julissa Miranda, was killed. Three other people were injured.

According to the petition, Buttimer had a blood alcohol content of .095 more than 90 minutes after the crash.

The petition stated that Buttimer told police he was returning home from a concert at Summerfest in Milwaukee. Prosecutors said in the petition that Buttimer’s vehicle was traveling 85 mph five seconds before the crash.

On Tuesday, DuPage County Judge Joshua Dieden issued an order that Buttimer be detained in the county jail pretrial.

Buttimer’s attorneys have asked for reconsideration of that decision, and a hearing on the matter is set for Thursday.

The driver of the Buick was charged with misdemeanor DUI.
