Dining out: Sample fine wines at Capital Grille, summer menu at Fat Rosie’s and more

A little vino would be keeno

Wine lovers will want to check out The Capital Grille’s summer wine event The Generous Pour, back for its 18th year. From now through Aug. 30, the program includes two ways to enjoy samples of six wines that are rarely served by the glass.

The traditional tasting experience features pours of six wines for $38 with the purchase of a dinner entree. New this year is a multicourse curated wine dinner pairing each of the wines with a chef-created dish for $125 per person.

This year’s lineup highlights wines from Duckhorn Portfolio in Napa Valley, including the Heritage cabernet sauvignon, North Coast Brut Rosé, North Coast sauvignon blanc and Napa Valley merlot.

Summer fiesta

Fat Rosie’s is celebrating summer with a limited-time seasonal menu featuring unexpected ingredients with traditional Mexican flavors. The summer menu features four seasonal drinks, two appetizers, two entrées, a seasonal side and a dessert.

Limited-time dishes include brochetas de camarón featuring grilled shrimp and pineapple glazed in a strawberry chipotle sauce; pechuga adobada, with adobo-marinated chicken paired with creamy sautéed chayote, corn, poblano rajas and cotija cheese; and the vegetarian-friendly tacos de portobello with the mushrooms marinated al pastor and served with arugula, pickled onions and morita sauce.

Summer sips include the Peach & Bubbles, with reposado tequila, peach puree and margarita mix finished with an upside-down 187 ml prosecco bottle; La Playa, a blend of blanco tequila, blue Curaçao and piña colada; and the Guavendar Spritz mocktail with pink guava, house-made limeade and lavender topped with sparkling water.

Customer appreciation

Several suburban restaurants are betting that one bite of their most popular item will make you a believer.

The Budlong Southern Chicken, Wing It On!, Big Chicken and Dirty Dough will host a customer appreciation day Tuesday, July 14, called Bet on the Bite, when they’ll give away their signature item for free with no purchase necessary and no strings attached.

The event lasts all day during normal business hours at each location. The Budlong (Oakbrook Center Mall) will serve a free banana pudding cup, Wing It On! (Lombard) will give away two free bone-in medium Buffalo wings, Big Chicken (Rosemont) will offer a free chicken tender plus Shaq’s ranch, and Dirty Dough (Buffalo Grove and South Barrington) will hand out a free chocolate chip cookie.

Barking up the right tree

JoJo’s ShakeBAR in Naperville is taking the fun outdoors with its reopened Treehouse patio. This summer the space has been reimagined as a retro summer escape, leaning into JoJo’s signature ’80s and ’90s atmosphere with bright colors, disco balls, hanging CDs and lush greenery.

New to the menu for open-air adult enjoyment is the strawberry mango soft serve margarita, a creamy summer cocktail served in a coupe glass. All ages can enjoy the new dirty sodas along with a summer menu that includes comfort-food favorites, newer savory additions, upgraded wing and tender sauces, Biggie Shakes, ShakeBARs, smoothies and desserts made for sharing.

From now through Aug. 30 guests ordering entrees will receive all the supplies needed to create custom friendship bracelets at their table. Reservations are available through OpenTable.

Taste of the tropics

Bonefish Grill locations are hosting a tropical four-course cocktail pairing dinner featuring a drink menu curated by rum and tiki expert Jeff “Beachbum” Berry.

The menu pairings include coconut shrimp with an Orchid Isle cocktail, grilled scallops and mango salad with a Jungle Bird, and blackened unicorn fish with a Tahitian Remedy. Finish the night with guava crème brûlée and a Passion Fruit Pearl Diver for dessert.

The dinners, on Thursday, July 16, or Tuesday, July 21, are $65 per person.
