Lake in the Hills man gets 96 years for fatal 2020 road rage shooting in Elgin

A Lake in the Hills man convicted in a deadly 2020 road rage shooting in Elgin has been sentenced to 96 years in prison, authorities said.

Dru K. Jarvis, 27, was convicted of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and armed violence in October 2025 for the 2020 shooting of two men after they honked at a car that cut them off in traffic.

The shooting took place in the early morning of Aug. 22, 2020. Authorities from the Kane County state’s attorney’s office say a vehicle in which Jarvis was a passenger cut off another car, causing them to honk.

Jarvis and the driver pulled up next to the vehicle with the men — co-workers on their way home from work — at the intersection of State Street and Kimball Street in Elgin, and Jarvis fired multiple shots, officials said.

The driver was struck in the leg, and the passenger, 41-year-old Francisco Trujillo-Uscanga of Elgin, was struck in the torso. Trujillo-Uscanga died a short time later at Saint Joseph Hospital, authorities said.

A week later, Jarvis committed another shooting on the 300 block of South McLean Boulevard in Elgin, authorities said. He was arrested and charged. In 2021, he was found guilty of aggravated discharge of a weapon and sentenced to four years in prison.

That arrest helped investigators connect him to the Aug. 22 murder.

Jarvis must serve 100% of the 45-year sentence for first-degree murder. He must serve at least 85% of the 31 years for attempted murder and at least 50% of the 20-year armed violence sentence.

The sentences are to be served consecutively, and Jarvis received credit for 887 days served in jail.
