Driver missing after car ends up in pond near Lake Zurich
Authorities are still searching for the driver of a vehicle that wound up in a pond near Lake Zurich Sunday evening.
Wauconda Fire District crews were dispatched to the pond on the grounds on Mount St. Joseph on the 24000 block of Route 12 just before 5:20 p.m. for a report of a car in a pond.
The vehicle traveled through a fence and come to rest in the pond about 50 feet from the shore, submerged up to the windows. Firefighters noticed the driver’s side window was open and the air bags had been deployed.
Two firefighters entered the pond and swam to the vehicle to confirm no one was inside.
The Lake County sheriff’s office used police dogs to track the driver’s whereabouts, but lost the scent about a quarter mile away.
The vehicle was eventually towed out of the pond.
The sheriff’s office is still investigating the crash.
