Community partners unite for 6th annual Juneteenth at Harper
The sounds of the Harper College’s Jazz Ensemble permeated the afternoon air Saturday like the billowing clouds above the sixth annual Juneteenth in the Burbs celebration.
The celebration at the Drs. Kenneth and Catherine Ender Outdoor Pavilion on Harper’s Palatine campus, was presented by iCU Community in partnership with Harper, Schaumburg Township and the Schaumburg Township District Library.
Chairwoman Deborah Harris said the event helps preserve history and brings people together to learn about and celebrate the community’s roots.
“I think the notion is that it (Juneteenth) is a separate holiday, but really it’s an American holiday,” said Harris.
This marks the third year for the celebration at Harper College.
Harris also was excited that Harper College had just committed to hosting Juneteenth in the Burbs until 2028.
The celebration has become a regional gathering that draws hundreds of people from throughout the Northwest suburbs.
This year’s celebration featured live music and performances throughout the afternoon, including appearances by the Harper Jazz Ensemble, Harper’s Triple H hip-hop dance crew, Funk Brotherz, Hustle and Float Soul Line Dancing, DJ Yella and community performers.
