Child dies in retention pond in Lake in the Hills

A 7-year-old child died Wednesday night in a pond in Lake in the Hills, authorities said.

The child’s family reported them missing shortly after 6 p.m. on Steeplechase Way, according to a news release from Lake in the Hills police.

A police officer found the child in a retention pond.

Lake in the Hills police and the McHenry County coroner are investigating the death.

Police say foul play is not suspected.

The news release did not specify if the child was a boy or a girl.
