Tornado touched down in Naperville, lifted in Lisle, weather service confirms
A weak tornado touched down in Naperville and crossed into Lisle last Thursday night, the National Weather Service said.
The tornado was assigned a preliminary EF-0 rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with estimated peak winds of around 80 mph. It was one of at least 17 tornadoes that struck parts of northern and central Illinois as well as northwest Indiana on Thursday, June 11, the NWS confirmed.
In Naperville, the tornado began near Gartner Road and Olesen Drive and moved northeast through the Huntington Hill and Olesen Estates neighborhoods. Damage consisted of snapped and uprooted trees.
The tornado appeared to widen while crossing Naper Boulevard and over Huntington Apartments, “where a roughly 150 yard wide swath of extensive tree damage” was reported by the NWS Chicago office. The tornado appeared to lift just west of Benedictine Parkway.
Naperville, meanwhile, is providing a free, citywide special bulk brush collection. It started Monday, and it’s expected to conclude by the end of the day on Saturday, June 27.
There were no reported injuries to residents or city employees, a Naperville spokeswoman confirmed Monday.
An EF1 tornado also was confirmed in Bartlett Thursday night, damaging a gas station and businesses at a strip mall near Route 59 and Stearns Road, as well as several homes.
More powerful tornadoes were reported in Hickory Hills near Midway International Airport and in downstate Streator.
Forecasters expect more showers and thunderstorms Wednesday.
