Daily Herald photo contest winners for May 2026
Lenore Sammartino’s adorable photo of a baby robin tops this month’s contest. The Lombard resident writes, “First robin's nest with babies I've seen up close. Innocence at its best.”
In the second spot is Mike Weimer’s vivid photo of a hummingbird. The St. Charles resident writes, “After a couple of years of trying, I finally succeeded in photographing an adult male ruby-throated hummingbird with its iridescent throat feathers at the right angle to the sun to reflect its namesake ruby-red color, rather than a black reflection. … It was well worth the wait!”
Coming in third is Sue Fullman’s impressive photo capturing a woodpecker in midflight, with its wings fully extended and a bit of food in its beak. The Arlington Heights resident writes, “I like it because it is both colorful and stop action.”
Evan Mann’s classic spring photo takes the fourth spot. The Island Lake resident writes, “I love the flowers and colors of the photo, and how clustered they are.”
