Forget Vernon Hills — athletic club coming to Mundelein
A health club offering around-the-clock access is coming to Mundelein.
Ryse Athletic Club will fill vacant space at 333 Washington Blvd., in the Allanson Industrial Park. The nearly 33,000-square-foot building formerly was home to Lakeside Transportation, a school bus company.
This will be Ryse Athletic Club’s second location. The first, at 5328 Grand Ave. in Gurnee, opened in 2020.
Members will be able to use both locations, owner Justin Maki said.
Maki had planned to open a second Ryse in the former Carson’s Furniture Gallery store in Vernon Hills. The village board there approved a building certificate for the operation in 2025.
When the Vernon Hills location didn’t work out as planned, Maki shifted to Mundelein.
“That turned out to be a complete blessing, as this space is much more suitable and has tons of potential for what we’re looking to do,” he said in an email.
Ryse will offer weightlifting equipment, a basketball court, a seasonal outdoor weightlifting area, locker rooms for men and women and other amenities.
Membership will cost $50 a month, village documents indicate. Members will gain entry using a mobile app. The business will be staffed by employees at all times.
No exercise classes are planned, but individual personal training will be available.
Maki aims to open the new Ryse this summer.
“Obviously that will depend on completing a build out,” he said.
Health clubs need variations from Mundelein’s zoning rules to operate in industrial areas, and Ryse got one from the village board Monday night.
Trustee Arnold Krinski voted against the request, expressing concerns about patron safety outside a facility open all hours.
