Learn about sacred jazz at Gary UMC in Wheaton
Sing, listen and experience the sacred art of jazz at Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton on Sundays, April 12 and 19.
Deanna Witkowski will present “Makes the Heart to Sing: Jazz in Worship” at 10:10 a.m. Witkowski is a pianist, composer, author and scholar and winner of the 2002 Great American Jazz Piano Competition.
On Sunday, April 12, the focus will be the liturgical music of Mary Lou Williams. On Sunday, April 19, Witkowski will share from her own catalog of original choral, congregational and instrumental sacred jazz.
The class is free and open to the public. Books and CDs will be available for purchase at both classes.
Witkowski also will lead a jazz worship on Sunday, April 26.
The church at 224 N. Main St. has celebrated deep roots in the community since 1853. The church has vibrant music, kids, youth and adult ministries, plus opportunities for local, national and global missions. The church offers worship at 9 and 11:11 a.m. In-between services, there’s Sunday school for all ages, a coffee fellowship hour, plus the chapel is available for prayer and reflection.
