Knitters at Gary UMC in Wheaton provide prayer squares for Lent
New this year for Lent, the knitters at Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton are providing prayer squares for congregants.
The Gary Knitters already knit afghans for high school seniors, shawls for people with health or other challenges and blankets for baptisms.
All who worship at the Wheaton church during Lent are invited to take a square, hold it in their hands when they pray, and know that it was knit with love. Each prayer square has a cross knit in the middle.
The church at 224 N. Main St. has celebrated deep roots in the community since 1853. It has vibrant music, kids, youth and adult ministries, plus opportunities for local, national and global missions.
The church offers worship at 9 and 11:11 a.m. In-between services, there’s Sunday school for all ages, a coffee fellowship hour, plus the chapel is available for prayer and reflection.
During Holy Week, the church offers 9 and 11:11 a.m. worship with palms on Palm Sunday, March 29.
On Maundy Thursday, April 2, the service will include a soup supper and worship from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
On Good Friday, April 3, worship will begin at 7 p.m. with congregants leaving in relative darkness. On Easter Sunday, April 5, a sunrise service will begin at 6:30 a.m. on the church’s lawn on Main Street.
Traditional Easter worship at 9 and 11:11 a.m., with an Easter egg hunt in Memorial Park at 10:15 a.m. For more information, go to garychurch.org or contact the church office at office@garychurch.org.
