Who’s poised to take over in the Class 4A girls basketball playoffs?

The pairings are set and we’re ready to go.

But beyond the seeding of the IHSA Class 4A girls basketball sectionals, what will be the deciding factors in determining champions?

Or, better put, who will be the deciding factors?

Let’s take a look at a bunch of area players poised to put their teams on their shoulders and take over in the playoffs starting with next week’s regionals.

Lily Fisher, Libertyville

Fisher has one of the hottest hands in the state right now.

The 6-foot-1 junior guard just scored a career-high 34 points and leads the top-seeded Wildcats into the Guilford sectional. A double-double machine, Fisher also recently scored 23 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and dished 8 assists in a nice nonconference win over Maine South.

Liv Johnson, Carmel

Johnson’s just a freshman, but she looks more than ready for this moment.

Last week the 6-1 wing set a program record by scoring 39 points in a stunning 56-30 win over Benet. Johnson’s averaging 18 points and 9.5 rebounds for the Corsairs, a No. 2 seed at the Guilford sectional.

Trinity Jones, Naperville Central

For all the injuries battled by the Clemson-bound senior, Jones remains one of the state’s elite players. The 6-foot-2 senior was just announced as the lone Illinois representative — male or female — on the McDonald’s All-American Team.

Averaging better than 28 points per game, Jones has a tremendous supporting cast with Erin Hackett and Annabelle Kritzer. The Redhawks will be a tough out as the third seed in the East Aurora sectional.

Alli Linke, Prospect

Linke and the Knights are on an absolute roll.

They claimed the Mid-Suburban East title and Linke became the program’s all-time leading scorer. The senior, committed to Murray State, also was named the player of the year in the MSL East.

Prospect has the perfect leader to defend the top seed in the Schaumburg sectional.

Danyella Mporokoso, Waubonsie Valley

Through three-plus years of excellence, no one’s been able to stop Mporokoso. This week she scored a career-high 43 points in a loss to Naperville Central.

The senior guard, committed to Illinois State University, set a program record for points in a season and moved into the IHSA’s top 20 all-time while vaulting past 2,700 points.

The Warriors won their first 18 games of the season and sit as the second seed in the East Aurora sectional, just behind Benet and ahead of Naperville Central in a loaded field.

Brooklyn Schilb, St. Charles East

The season hasn’t exactly been smooth for the Saints, the third seed in the Bartlett sectional, but Schilb has been rock solid.

The 6-foot sophomore, who recently crossed the 1,000-point mark for her brief career, is the type of player who can carry her team through a tough field headed by Glenbard West and Lake Park — teams the Saints lost to in the regular season.

Averaging 23 points and 9.5 rebounds, Schilb will need to dominate.

Greta Thompson, Fremd

After finishing second in the state last season and third the year before, Fremd is lying in the weeds as the third seed in the Schaumburg sectional.

Thompson, committed to Rollins College, and the Vikings aren’t going to give up the sectional title without a fight. She’s a four-year varsity player who knows what it takes to win the biggest games.
