New, larger H-Mart Asian grocery store opens in renovated former Kohl’s site in Schaumburg

A new, larger H-Mart grocery store has opened in a renovated Kohl’s store in Schaumburg, replacing the village’s original decade-old location just blocks away.

The latest site of the nation’s largest Asian supermarket chain has 80,000 square feet at 420 E. Golf Road, including a food court and a stage for entertainment.

The prior Schaumburg location at 34 E. Schaumburg Road had just under 11,000 square feet, the village’s Economic Development Director Matt Frank said.

The expansion has been in the works for more than a year. In his January 2025 State of the Village address, Schaumburg Mayor Tom Dailly announced the prospect of 100 people being employed at the new location, including at its bakery and interior restaurants.

Attending the grand opening late last week, Dailly found the finished product well worth the wait.

“I think it’s fabulous,” he said. “These stores now are all very clean and meticulous in their preparation of the shelves. And the food court is pretty cool.”

If the facility itself wasn’t impressive enough, the grand opening included a tea time in the food court, VIP speeches and cultural dances.

Company officials said that since its first store opening in Woodside, New York, in 1982, H-Mart has now grown to more than 90 locations across 14 states.

One question the company declined to clarify, even as the new store was set to open, was whether Schaumburg’s original site would continue to operate. Even village officials couldn’t say for sure whether Schaumburg would be home to one H-Mart or two.

But the answer was clear Monday that the first store is now permanently closed.
