A ‘zoo’ without cages: Immersive holographic animal experience opens at Hawthorn mall

An immersive zoo experience — without cages, live animals or virtual reality headsets — is celebrating its grand opening Thursday on the lower level of Hawthorn mall in Vernon Hills.

Hologram Zoo Illinois across from H&M is described as the first of its kind in the Midwest. Advanced laser-technology is used to bring realistic, life-sized, free-floating holographic animals to life in a walk-through setting.

The attraction opened Dec. 15. A deejay, balloon animals, light bites, raffles and giveaways are part of the grand opening and ribbon cutting from 4 to 6 p.m. The first 20 families will receive a complimentary showing of one holographic experience and a special giveaway.

An Australia-based firm called Axiom Holographics created and is marketing the concept, with 45 locations worldwide.

According to a news release, the concept has been named one of Time magazine's “Best Inventions” and featured by Forbes for its innovative approach to immersive entertainment.

“A hologram zoo is like a normal zoo, except all of the animals are made out of laser light, and you can put your hand straight through them!” according to the company’s website.

The slogan is “Dive into Wonder.” Families using lightweight glasses rather than bulky virtual reality headsets can walk through expansive holographic tunnels and enclosures to get up close with elephants, whales and dinosaurs, for example.

Owner/operator Tleules Mananov said the goal is to “spark curiosity and wonder while giving families an unforgettable shared experience — without barriers, boundaries or limitations.”

Festivities are sponsored by the village in partnership with the Green Oaks, Libertyville, Mundelein, Vernon Hills Chamber of Commerce.

The attraction aligns with the evolution of Hawthorn to a destination for “experiential” entertainment, dining and gathering.

“As part of our broader redevelopment vision, we’re focused on bringing experiences to Hawthorn that you can’t find anywhere else in the region,” said Jack Yejekwe, general manager.
