10th annual Half Madness set for Sunday in Batavia

The 10th annual Half Madness 13.1 Half Marathon will be held at 7 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 27. It is designed to be a warm-up race to Chicago, Milwaukee and Twin Cities marathons. The Verizon Half Madness Half Marathon is an USATF certified race.

It was established in response to an increasing demand from hard-core runners and amateurs looking to get their feet wet before the main event and runners in between who want a serious challenge, but don't have the time to train for a full marathon.

The race will begin at Island Park, off North Island Avenue and Houston Street in downtown Batavia. Check-in begins at 7 a.m.

Registration fees are $100 through Aug. 27. All registrations are being handled through ww.signmeup.com.

The race route is a mix of flat to rolling terrain that will bring athletes through the residential streets of Batavia and along the winding Fox River. This course is designed for athletes from beginners to the experienced, while presenting a challenging and scenic trip through the Fox River Valley. The race is spectator friendly, offering several viewing point where runners can see their supporters within walking distance of downtown. There are well-stocked aid stations throughout the course.

As a participant in the Verizon Half marathon, each athlete will receive a technical T-shirt, a finishers medal, and a ticket to the post-race party with free food and drink from 8:15 a.m. to noon.
