Mount Prospect warns of scam emails
Mount Prospect is warning the public about an email scam involving someone posing as a village employee.
The groups targeted by the scam recently went through the village’s planning and zoning process. Later on, they received a suspicious email claiming they owed the village outstanding fees with a request to wire the funds. The email encourages the recipients to only respond to the email instead of calling the village to confirm.
Village officials say they will never solicit funds in this manner.
Some ways to detect a potential scam is to watch for a slightly incorrect email address; odd misspellings and poor grammar; questionable links or attachments; suspicious timing; urgent requests for money or personal information through wire transfer or gift cards; and requests to communicate only through email or phone number they provide.
If something seems off, call the village at (847) 392-6000.
