Glen Ellyn District 89 seeks applicants for empty school board seat

Glen Ellyn Elementary District 89 is seeking candidates for an open school board seat left vacant by the resignation of a longtime member.

Scott Pope, who was first elected to the board in April 2015, has stepped down.

“This decision was not made lightly, as serving on the board for the past 10 years has been a deeply rewarding experience,” Pope said in a statement released by the district. “However, due to increasing personal commitments, I find myself unable to dedicate the time and energy required to fully support the board and the students of our district.”

Under Illinois School Code, because there are fewer than 868 days remaining in his term, the remaining board members will vote to fill the seat by appointment.

Anyone interested in the role is invited to a Zoom informational session from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28.

Applicants must be at least 18 years old on the date of the appointment; a U.S. citizen; a registered voter; and a resident of Illinois and the district for at least one year.

Applicants also must submit a letter of interest, a resume and a candidate information form, which is on the district’s website, by 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 8. The letter and résumé can be emailed to tsevier@ccsd89.org. They can also be dropped off or mailed to: Theresa Sevier, Community Consolidated School District 89, 22W600 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn, IL 60137.

The appointed board member will serve the rest of Pope’s term, which expires in April 2027.

In the last school board race, Pope, Yannick Koger, who was appointed to the board in 2021 and is now its president, as well as Jessica McGee, ran together on a winning slate. McGee was the top vote-getter, followed by Pope and Koger in 2023.

The district includes four elementary schools and Glen Crest Middle School. Educators, meanwhile, welcomed students back to school Wednesday.

“There are many district priorities this year, and your voice will be important in that work,” Superintendent Doug Eccarius, who was hired during Pope’s tenure, said in a community message.

“We will be asking families to get involved as we start to develop a new strategic plan, start a Citizen Financial Committee, and refine our advanced learning opportunities.”
