Person of interest in Des Plaines killing released without charges

A person of interest in the fatal shooting of a Rosemont man last month in Des Plaines was released from police custody without charges over the weekend, authorities announced Monday.

The suspect, a Des Plaines man, had been arrested Friday night in connection with the July 23 death of 33-year-old Joseph Kalamaris.

Kalamaris was found dead by relatives inside a car parked on the 900 block of North Avenue in Des Plaines. He had been shot in the back, an autopsy revealed.

Police began focusing on the person of interest as the investigation progressed, and officers tried to stop his vehicle Friday night on Willow Road just west I-294 in Northbrook, Des Plaines police said Monday. The vehicle sped off, however, and police didn’t pursue it.

Wheeling police subsequently found the vehicle on the 300 block of Mors Avenue, and the suspect fled on foot into a nearby residential neighborhood, Des Plaines police said.

Wheeling and Des Plaines police searched the area and warned residents via social media to stay indoors for their safety. Following a tip from a resident, officers found the man in the backyard of a house on the 300 block of Park Avenue and arrested him, about 10:15 p.m. Friday, authorities said.

The man was released by Des Plaines police shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday.

The shooting remains under investigation.
