Elgin AAUW announces 2025 scholarship recipients
Carol Wieg and Vivienne Bailey, co-chairs of the Elgin Branch AAUW, are pleased to announce the 2025 scholarship recipients.
Valeria Hernandez of Elgin will be receiving the Betty Medearis Scholarship. Valeria, who is graduating from ECC this spring, will be attending Northern University in the fall, majoring in education. She has already been selected as a Golden Apple Scholar and has been paired with top teachers in Illinois to participate in a hands-on summer school program with Chicago Public Schools and St. Xavier University. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and TRIO organizations at ECC, and is the youngest member of the Elgin Hispanic Network.
Maricarmen Paredes Lopez of Woodstock will be receiving the Brooke Transue Legacy Scholarship and is attending Aurora University, majoring in health care administration. During high school, Maricarmen was an Illinois State Scholar and AP Scholar with Honor and Distinction. Now, at Aurora University, she has maintained a 4.0 GPA while also participating in Aurora’s chapters of Latin American Student Organization and the Healthcare Administration Organization.
AAUW’s mission is to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, and research. Membership is open to all graduates having associates or equivalent baccalaureate degrees from accredited colleges and universities.
